The Wombat Ultra G3 sits right at the top of the Wombat range – and for good reason. It combines huge cargo capacity, an incredibly stable mixed-wheel design, powerful Bafang M430 mid-drive motor, premium cargo-specific components and, most importantly, the brilliant Enviolo AUTOMATiQ automatic shifting system.

For me, this is my personal favourite in the Wombat range.

The reason is simple: the Ultra takes a bike capable of carrying serious loads and makes it remarkably easy to ride. Instead of constantly thinking about which gear you should be in, the Enviolo AUTOMATiQ system can take care of the shifting for you. Set your preferred pedalling cadence and the bike continuously adjusts the gearing to help maintain it – whether you're accelerating away from the lights, climbing a hill or cruising along the flat.

On a cargo bike, I think that's more than just a luxury feature. It allows you to concentrate more on riding the bike, your passengers, traffic and what's happening around you rather than worrying about changing gears. Wombat itself highlights this as a safety benefit of the automatic system.

Why AUTOMATiQ Makes the Ultra So Special

This is the feature that really separates the Ultra G3 from the rest of the Wombat range.

Traditional gears require you to decide when to shift and which gear you need. The Enviolo CVT works differently, providing continuously variable, stepless gearing rather than a conventional set of individual gears.

The Ultra then takes this a step further with Enviolo AUTOMATiQ.

You choose your preferred pedalling cadence – essentially how quickly you like your legs to turn – and the system automatically adjusts the gearing to try to keep you there. Go uphill and it automatically makes the gearing easier. Pick up speed and it automatically adjusts again.

Set It and Forget It

For everyday family riding, this makes an enormous amount of sense.

When you've got children sitting behind you, you're approaching an intersection and there are cars, pedestrians and other cyclists around, you've already got plenty to concentrate on.

With the Ultra, you can simply pedal and ride.

You're not looking for a shifter or thinking about whether you're in the right gear when you stop. The bike takes care of the gearing while you concentrate on steering, braking, traffic and your passengers.

That's why I particularly like the Ultra. The automatic shifting doesn't just make it more premium – it makes a large cargo bike incredibly approachable and easy to ride.

The Best of Both Wheel Sizes

The Ultra G3 uses what Wombat describes as a mullet configuration – a full-size 24-inch front wheel combined with a smaller 20-inch rear wheel.

It's a clever combination.

The 24-inch front wheel helps give the Ultra the confident steering and rolling characteristics of a larger-wheel bike. At the rear, the 20-inch wheel allows the cargo deck, children and luggage to sit closer to the ground.

That lower centre of gravity can make a huge difference when you're carrying passengers. Instead of having all that extra weight sitting high above the bike, it's positioned lower, helping the Ultra feel more planted and stable.

It's a great example of why the Ultra has been designed as a cargo bike from the ground up.

Why the Ultra G3 Is My Favourite Wombat

There are some fantastic bikes throughout the Wombat range, but if I were choosing one for myself, the Ultra G3 would be my pick.

The 24"/20" wheel combination gives you a great balance between natural handling and a low centre of gravity. The 120 Nm Bafang motor provides plenty of assistance, the 4-piston brakes give you the stopping power a proper cargo bike deserves, and the extended rear deck provides enormous flexibility.

But it's the Enviolo AUTOMATiQ system that really wins me over.

Why We Love the Ultra G3 for Adelaide

The Ultra G3 could replace a surprising number of car trips for an Adelaide family.

School drop-off in the morning, shopping during the day, picking the kids up in the afternoon and a ride down towards Brighton or Glenelg on the weekend – the same bike can handle all of it.
